Waiuta Information Report

Waiuta’s Reef of Gold
By Tara

Nestled south beside Reefton, Waiuta is now a small ghost town that was long ago used for mining gold. Many lived there until 1951 when the village became a historic site. It was home to enormous tanks and mining reefs.

Town History
Near the town the Birthday Reef of gold was discovered on the 9th of November 1905 by four prospectors exploring the upper reaches of Blackwater Stream. Someone bought the reef for $500, then after proving it valuable they sold onto London-based Gold Fields Company for 30,000 pounds. The money was worth it as the mine was dug to 900 meters deep over the next 45 years resulting in 750,000 ounces of gold.

Mining Rock
The owners of the reef basically cut out masses of rock to then be loaded through tunnels and brought to the surface. Timber props came in handy for stopping the tunnels from crashing down. Most land around the mine was cleared for timber costing them thousands to make the tunnel more sturdy.

Waiuta Life
As years passed Waiuta became famous for its sports teams which drew people from far away causing the town to get bigger. Their main sport was rugby and Waiutas team ongoingly did well in local games. Because of Waiutas location down the road, the tiny block of houses had to become independent in case of lack of food. As the 1930s settled in the town then had 600 people living there.

Later Years
At the end of the road on the 9th of July 1951 when the mine was used for ventilation and pumping water the cave  collapsed and could no longer reduce water and gas. The company decided that rebuilding the mine would be too expensive so all was abandoned and nobody lived there.

kiwi recount

After a 40 minute car trip into the heart of Paparoa Range; our class Ruma C emerged through the car door to reveal a two metre high predator free fence, with a Kiwi Sanctuary logo dead centre.

Leading us through the gate, our expert Joe gestured us into a miniature compartment decorated with pictures, signs and short descriptions of her volunteer job. Handling the precious Kiwi feathers and a rough, but smooth egg shell; Joe spoke with genuine love and integrity of the beautiful Kiwi; telling many facts about habitat loss, egg laying and territorial calls.

After our quick chat, we walked with purpose downhill across a creek while Joe scuttled threw the immense gorse to give a health check on one of her Great Spotted Kiwi.

As we waited for Joe to come back with the kiwi, we began exploring their habitat inside the sanctuary. After a few hopeful moments later, we saw Joe walking calmly towards us with something squirming inside a blue bag. As she reached the bottom of the hill she sat down on the damp, mossy grass, rummaged her hands gently inside the bag and out revealed a gorgeous kiwi. Cradling the soft, beautiful creature in her arms, the kiwi squirmed but Joe held him gently as she weighed the bird to check it’s health.

Personal comment: I thought it was very kind of Joe to rescue and save these kiwi’s from stoats and other predators. Making them homes where they would be safe and healthy.

Nobody ever approached the garden with its prickles climbing up the stone wall including a burning smell coming from a courtyard beyond.

weekly reflections week 5

This week has been good because I put time into my maths and writing and I was one step ahead when it was reading. Next week to make my work better I will spend more time on my scratch creation though and my personal inquiry is not yet up to date. In week six I will also plan out my day more on Trello and use my self directed learning for the things I need to work on. Maybe if I use each hour for something different it might be a bit more even.

Quick write Tuesday 14th of August

“The cats out of the bag” Stevie whispered urgently through gritted teeth. They had been quietly inventing something behind Jones mothers back and she had found them talking softly in the basement around a large, leather backpack. “What are you two boys doing down here in the cold” mum said pretending not to notice the enormous thing they had obviously just been working on. “Come and have some lunch upstairs at the table” she said and smiling down at the small crouching boys.

This Tuesday’s ten minute quick write. I hope you like it:)

Quick write 13.8.18

“Leave me alone I’m about to watch the lights in the sky” Pauline bellowed. “Aghhh” her older sibling Jack grumbled. “Why do you even like watching those annoying lights”. A sparkling flash roared in distance. It was guy forks and their parents had gone out , so Jack was in charge. “Because they are cool” replied Pauline. She was not really that intrested in other stuff like  scateboarding and motorcross. Her brother was though and to him having his younger sister watching the large sparks in the sky seemed annoying.

This is my quick write for today I hope you enjoy.

Week 3 Reflections

For week three I do not feel I have organised my time enough for maths. Trello has helped me with planning my day but maths is usually on the bottom of my list. I think I have gotten on with my reading but may need to blog it more often. Writing has been one of the top things I have focused on and I just need to handle it quicker to get on with my other work. In week four I will organise  my day so that I have at least twenty minutes of maths buddy and use up my day with the closest due tasks instead of the latest.

The cruel skinny body poked out as he walked and his shoulders were held high when he turned round to talk. Jimmy was a scary man who wore a long black cloak matching his short folding hair. One day Jimmys style changed when he was younger, it has been this way ever since. Even though you might think Jimmy was this way all his life but that is not true people. It was never true...

Gruesome remake of three little pigs

In a big blossomy field lived two pigs and their dad and at the age of only three weeks old their dad kicked them out and said just one sentences. “Alright  I’m sick of you boys, get out of my house and just remember this: don’t go near those wolves”. The little pigs didn’t care though. “I can’t believe you kicked us out” they said. “Just because you don’t like us doesn’t mean you can get rid of us”. No reply came so the two set out to build their houses.

The youngest built his house out of small stone bricks and the other in a big mine that everyone was scared of so he wouldn’t be disturbed. Just then he made the biggest mistake of his life because just then his life ended. The mine was full of wolves. Meanwyyhile his brother was just making some tea as a celebration for finishing his house. Just as he was sitting down in his chair he heard a knock at the wood door. “Hello I’m Mr Wolf, I don’t believe we’ve met” said a deep voice.

“Hi Mr Wolf” said the small pig feeling slightly scared. “May I come in” asked Mr Wolf. “No way” said the pig and bolted the door tighter. “Then you leave me no choice” said Mr Wolf. Suddenly the pig saw a flickering flame and screamed. No one heard him though and he was never seen again and neither was his brother.

Quick write 30/7/18

Create a story about a paper back writer
In 1965 a man called Bill decided to give up his acting career and be a paperback writer. He did this because he hurt his left leg and it was never the same. He wrote his books about huge city adventures where he ran from bears in near by forests. Stories about how he fell in rivers and came to a lake. Bill died in 1997. Nobody knew how...

My weekly reflections

For my weekly reflection I am going write every two weeks to show my achievements and what I need to improve. Hope you like them.

What I’ve done well this term so far:
This term I have done a few things such as, my this day in history and my quick writes. There has not been many things I have blogged this week and that why I need to show what I’d like to be better at in the next two weeks!

What I’d like to be better at:
In the next week of this term I’d like to be better at my blogging this day in history because it may be blurry in the pictures I took. Also I’d like my quick writes to be a bit bigger in the ten minute time frame we have.

Flood kill 25 miners in Central Otago 1863

Facts By Emily Tess and Tara

Why do we need to know this?

Because it’s how we made money in the olden days to survive. Without the miners, New Zealand wouldn’t have a networth like today, we wouldn’t have the things we do now, if we didn’t mine. We can also relate to this because we have the Pike River mine near where we live, and it was devastating when it exploded; killing many. Many miners lost their lives in the mines, it is a dangerous place and we are fine with the fact that we are sending people down to the mines with the risk of them dying.

The flash floods that killed the miners were in north east in Queenstown.

The three little pigs plan

This was today's Quick Write, I did a plan about the three little pigs, I hope you enjoy!

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Times with my cousin.

My cousin is very unhelpful for things like pulling weeds out of the the garden and bagging kindling. Reason one, when he does it he puts all the wood in no shelter and when it rains that night their all wet and we can’t get our fire started. When he does the garden he’s almost worse, my cousin pulls out the vegetables because he thinks their weeds. He’s so leonine, that when you tell him off, he will tease you because your small.

This is not real.

This Day In History.

this article was about a New Zealand soldier (Leonard Manning) killed since the Vietnam war. I did this for my This Day In History.

Quick write: my school holiday

The first week of my school holiday was really just the same as every other. You know, like when you sleep in on the mornings wishing it could every day and playing with your pets. The second week on the hand was pretty exciting. At the start of the week we went into town for hockey training it was for both me and my sister. While we did that mum went to the supermarket for that week’s cupboard. Near the end of the week on Thursday night my oldest sibling Brydie came to our house and gave my other sister Tess a lesson with her pony Skippy. She came with a horse float because she was going to take my pony Cricket and me to her house while Tess and mum went to Christchurch for a horse event. When we dropped Cricket off in his paddock Brydie said she was very vogie that her two sisters could ride.   23/7/18

Explanation writing: how fermented food helps with gut biome

How fermented food helps with gut biome

About fermented food:
Most people say the best food is kept fresh. That’s where fermented food slots in. Fermented food will help to fight our bad bacteria throughout our bodies.  Our food that we eat now, is quite often going mouldy. It is much better than takeaways because these jars filled with fermented food can help us enormously. That’s not just because it’s a healthy diet.
Off goes the diseases:
Fermented food can help us fight diseases! Fermented yogurt proves it all. It can help us avoid heart disease. Since fermented food can stay perfectly ripe for months, it’s possible that it could be our worlds solution. This might be a nationwide discovery. Next, how does it help our gut biome?
Why it’s good for the gut:
Our fermented food is really proving its greatness towards people’s gut. It can help improve our good bacteria digestion. Researchers also studied that it has an important effect on gut issues! Fermented food keeps it fresher and much healthier so it is better than food that goes off. There are heaps of fermented foods too so you you won’t get bored eating tiny cucumbers all week. Now, should we take a look at this list of fermented food?
How many:
Fermented foods have a giant sized list of many different types of themselves. These fermented foods could probably last a whole season. You really haven’t heard of some of these foods. Here are some fermented foods that you could try: there is kimchi or you could try kombucha also kefir is a fermented milk and natto. There are many foods that you need but don’t know about. You can even make fermented food yourself only needing jars and a bag of food, like pickles maybe.
Overall:
That is how fermented food helps your gut, by destroying diseases, by having different healthy foods so you don’t get sick and helping our good bacteria digestion!
